In California, Bicycle fatalities increased 8.6 percent from 129 in 2012 to 141 in 2013. The number of bicycle related injuries has risen from 11,993 in 2009 to 13,213 in 2013.

Under section 21200 of the California Vehicle Code, when you are riding a bicycle you are considered a “vehicle” and are bound by all rules of the road found in the Vehicle Code. Surprisingly, the California vehicle code also regulates the “size” of bikes. They must be small enough for the rider to step off, support with one foot on the ground, then start safely. (Vehicle Code sec. 21201 (c).

In addition, if you are struck by another motor vehicle while riding your bike, and the responsible party has no auto insurance, you may still be able to have your medical bills paid under the “med pay” provision of your own automobile insurance policy.
